Clapeyron, Clausius-Clapeyron, and Antoine Equations: Example Problems

Try to solve these problems before watching the solutions in the screencasts.

Example Problem 1

The heat of fusion of ice to form water is 335 J/g. The densities of water and ice are 1.00 g/cm3 and 0.915 g/cm3, respectively. Calculate the melting temperature of ice when the pressure is 110 MPa.

Example Problem 2

Given the Antoine equation for benzene,

log10Psat = 6.90 – 1211/(220.8 + T)

where Psat is the saturation pressure in torr and T is the temperature in °C, estimate the heat of vaporization of benzene at 60°C.

Example Problem 3 (optional)

A kitchen pressure cooker operates at 1.50 bar. The heat of vaporization of water is 40.7 kJ/mol. The boiling point of water at 1.0 bar is 100°C. What is the boiling point of water in the pressure cooker?
