Adiabatic Reversible Expansion and Compression: Example Problems

Try to solve these problems before watching the solutions in the screencasts.

Example Problem 1

Carbon monoxide is compressed reversibly and adiabatically in a piston-cylinder from 1.0 bar and 75°C to 47 bar. How much work is required if CO is an ideal gas with a temperature-dependent heat capacity?

Example Problem 2

An ideal gas (CP = 31 J/(mol K)) at 450ºC and 8.5-MPa pressure expands reversibly through a steady-state, adiabatic turbine to a pressure of 0.2 MPa. What is the outlet temperature? How much work did the turbine produce?
