Isothermal CSTR: Interactive Simulation and optional Digital Experiment

Try to predict the behavior when a parameter changes before using a slider to change that parameter. A screencast below explains how to use this simulation. The digital experiment is optional.

Reaction in an Isothermal CSTR

Try to answer these questions before determining the answer with the simulation. We suggest that you write down the reasons for your answers.

  1. How does the fraction of the feed that is converted to product in an isothermal CSTR change for a first-order reaction as the feed concentration increases?
  2. As the volumetric flow rate increases (and the residence time in the reactor decreases) for an isothermal CSTR, does the amount of product produced per time increase or decrease for a second-order reaction?
  3. When the concentration of product in an isothermal CSTR decreases, by changing the volumetric flow rate, does the rate of product formation (molar flow rate of B leaving the CSTR) increase or decrease for a first-order reaction?
