Throttling and Joule-Thomson Expansion: Example Problems

Try to solve the problems before watching the solutions in the screencasts.

Example Problem 1

Water at 5 MPa and 200°C is feed to a throttle. The outlet pressure is 0.2 MPa.
a. What is the outlet temperature?
b. What phase or phases are present at the outlet? If more than one phase, determine how much of each phase.

Example Problem 2

Water at 5 M N2 at 100. bar and 35°C expands through a partially-opened valve (i.e., throttled) to a pressure of 2 bar. What is the temperature of N2 exiting the valve?
