Blasius Solution: Example Problems

Try to solve these problems before watching the solutions in the screencasts.

Example Problem 1

Consider the laminar flow of a fluid with a kinematic viscosity of 2.0 x 10-5 m2/s in parallel flow over a flat plate. Where along the plate is the boundary layer 5 mm thick? What is the velocity at that point? The freestream velocity, U, is 5 m/s.

Example Problem 2

Find the velocity at the edge of the boundary layer in terms of \(x\), given:

\[v = \frac{1}{2}\frac{\sqrt{u_{\infty}\gamma}}{x}\left( \eta \frac{df}{d\eta}\, -\, f \right)\]

\[\gamma = 8.6\,\, x\,\, 10^{-4}\,\, m^2/s\]

\[u_{\infty} = 2\,\, m/s\]
