Adding One Component to a Binary VLE Mixture
Initially an n-hexane/n-octane mixture (20 mol of liquid, 3 mol of vapor) is in vapor-liquid equilibrium in a cylinder with a movable piston. Additional n-hexane or n-octane is added when the “inject isothermally” play arrow is selected. The number of moles injected at constant temperature and pressure can be changed with the slider, and the system is modeled by Raoult’s law. The P-x-y diagram shows what happens when additional alkane is injected. The moles in the liquid phase (nL) and the vapor phase (nV ) are displayed, as are the corresponding mole fractions of n-hexane (xH in liquid, yH in vapor). Use the reset button to start the process again.
