Interactive Self-Study Module: Heterogeneous Chemical Equilibrium

Overview:

This module uses screencasts and an interactive simulation to explain how to do equilibrium calculations when one or more pure solid or pure liquid phases is involved in the equilibrium reaction. It then provides example problems to allow the user to test themselves. Your retention of material in this module will increase if you write down reasons for your answers to ConcepTests, questions in screencasts, and questions to answer before using the interactive simulation, and you try to solve the example problems before watching the solutions in the screencasts. We suggest using the learning resources in the following order:

  1. Attempt to answer the multiple choice ConcepTest and solve the example problem before watching the screencasts or working with the simulations.
  2. Watch the screencasts that describe heterogeneous chemical equilibrium and answer the questions within the screencasts.
  3. Review important equations for heterogeneous chemical equilibrium.
  4. Use the interactive simulation to further understand the behavior of heterogeneous chemical equilibrium.
  5. Try to solve the example problems before watching the solutions in the screencasts.
  6. Answer the ConcepTests.
  7. Look at the list of key points, but only after you try to list the key points yourself.
Motivation:
  • Determining equilibrium conversion is important for determining conditions to carry out chemical reactions. For reactions involving more than one phase (heterogeneous reactions), equilibrium calculations can determine if a reaction proceeds.
  • This module is intended for use in a thermodynamics course.
Before studying this module, you should be able to:
After studying this module, you should be able to:
  • Calculate equilibrium conversions for systems that contain more than one phase.
  • Predict how pressure changes will affect equilibrium conversion for a heterogeneous reaction.
  • Predict how the addition of a reactant or product to an equilibrium mixture will shift equilibrium for a heterogeneous reaction.
